Zbigniew Malak – opera singer, tenor

Zbigniew Malak is a Polish opera singer and tenor. He graduated from the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw. During his studies, he performed as Flute in B. Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream (Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera) and as Don Ottavio in W. A. Mozart's Don Giovanni (Warsaw Chamber Opera, Schlosstheater Rheinsberg).

His professional debut came in 2014 in Prague, where he sang Narraboth in Strauss's Salome, directed by Mariusz Treliński. He made his debut at the Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera in 2016, performing in R. Wagner's Tristan und Isolde (Ein Hirt, Junge Seeman), also directed by Mariusz Treliński and conducted by Stefan Soltesz. Since then, he has appeared regularly at the Teatr Wielki, singing roles such as Tamino in W. A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, the Novice in B. Britten's Billy Budd, Glock and A Doctor in S. Prokofiev's Fiery Angel, Damazy in St. Moniuszko's Haunted Manor, and tenor solos in Moniuszko's Halka and K. Szymanowski's Harnasie.

In other Polish theaters, Malak has performed as Ismaele in Verdi's Nabucco (Baltic Opera Gdańsk, Podkarpacka Philharmonic), Nadir in G. Bizet's Les pêcheurs de perles (Baltic Opera Gdańsk), Almaviva in G. Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia (Baltic Opera Gdańsk), Pastore in C. Monteverdi's L'Orfeo (Polish Royal Opera) Belial and Beelzebub in K. Penderecki's Paradise Lost, Steuermann in R. Wagner's Der fliegende Holländer (Grand Theater Łódź), and Bastien in W. A. Mozart's Bastien et Bastienne (Polish Royal Opera).

In 2022, he debuted at the National Theater Brno as Tamino in W. A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte. Later that year, during the Janaček Brno Festival 2022, he performed in L. Janaček's Z mrtveho domu. In 2023, he returned to Brno to perform as the First Jew in Strauss's Salome, and in 2024, he took on the role of Almaviva in G. Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia.

Malak's repertoire includes contemporary operas, such as P. Glass's The Trial (Franz and Block) at Opera at the Castle of Szczecin, K. Knittel's The Final Judgment (Borghi, van Groote, Priest) at Baltic Opera in Gdańsk, and E. Meier's, C. Rütti's, V. Villard's 13 Sternbilder aus dem Wallis at Théâtre La Poste in Visp, Switzerland, which was commissioned to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Valais joining the Swiss Confederation.

In addition to opera, Malak's repertoire includes concert and oratorio works such as G. F. Händel's Messiah, Samson (title role), Susanna, W. A. Mozart's Coronation Mass and Requiem, J. Haydn's Die Schöpfung, G. Rossini's Petite messe solennelle, R. Schumann's Paradies und die Peri, and J. S. Bach's Magnificat, among many others.

He has performed at prestigious venues, including Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera, National Theater in Prague, National Theater in Brno, Warsaw Chamber Opera, Polish Royal Opera, Baltic Opera in Gdańsk, Opera at the Castle of Szczecin, Schlosstheater Rheinsberg, Warmia and Mazury Philharmonic, Kalisz Philharmonic, Podkarpacka Philharmonic, Pomeranian Philharmonic, Poznań Philharmonic, and Thomaskirche in Leipzig.

He has worked with renowned conductors such as Stefan Soltesz, Kazushi Ono, Michał Klauza, Łukasz Borowicz, Jakub Hruša, Christina Pluhar, Tadeusz Kozłowski, Jan Tomasz Adamus, Rafał Janiak, Warcisław Kunc, Grzegorz Nowak, Marta Kluczyńska, and Jerzy Wołosiuk.

Malak has also had the pleasure of collaborating with distinguished directors, including Mariusz Treliński, Michał Znaniecki, Krzysztof Garbaczewski, Cezary Tomaszewski, David Radok, Jiří Heřman, Pia Partum, Annilese Miskimmon, and Paweł Szkotak.
